For Visual Review 8 I chose to focus on the title sequence for the hit show Black Sails. The sequence starts off show with the names of the directors and producers filling the screen. The use of music is essential for this sequence as there is no dialogue other than lyrics. The instrumentation was purposeful in using certain tones to high light the fact that Black Sails is a pirate show. The use of violins and piccolos in the music is a reference to the same interments food on ships during the 1700's. To. accompany the score, the director choses to use scale models of pirates and ships to depict the struggle for power in the West Indies. The models are all painted while to highlight the blood and details of the artists work. The way that the melody of the score crescendos as the title sequence goes on makes the visuals feel active. The sound designer was purposeful in the way they crafted the beats to match moments in the model reenactment.
